Plot summary
A dig at Pompeii uncovers a jewel box and the hardened body of a gladiator. On the drive to the Museo di Napoli the body stirs and the truck's driver is killed, and the body is found some distance from the wreck with no witness able to explain it. Dr. Carlo Fiorillo, who runs the museum, asks Dr. Paul Mallon to help him examine the find. Paul dismisses the idea that it might not be dead, though there is fresh blood on its hands. A bronze brooch from the jewel box carries Etruscan writing that Dr. Emanuel translates as a curse set by Quintillus Aurelius, the gladiator himself. Tina Enright, an artist engaged to Paul, has been painting a man she knows only from her dreams, and what she tells Paul matches the body in the museum.
