Plot summary
A nuclear submarine on a shakedown cruise in the Pacific is disabled by an enormous sonar contact, and tissue jammed in its dive planes belongs to a gigantic octopus. Marine biologists Lesley Joyce and John Carter of Harvard identify the sample, and when swimmers and ships go missing, they conclude the animal has been driven out of the Mindanao Deep by hydrogen bomb testing that left it radioactive and scattered its food supply. Navy officers, Commander Pete Mathews among them, want more proof. Reports of an attack on a Canadian freighter bring survivors into the inquiry, sea traffic in the North Pacific is halted, and Mathews and Joyce travel to the Oregon coast, where Sheriff Bill Nash shows them the marks left in the beach sand.

- Schneer was refused permission to film on the actual Golden Gate Bridge, so he mounted a camera on the back of a bakery truck and drove back and forth across the bridge until he had the footage he needed.
- Studio head Sam Katzman gave animator Ray Harryhausen only enough money to animate six of the giant octopus's eight tentacles, so two were cut from the final shooting miniature; Harryhausen jokingly named the creature "the sixtopus".
- A more extensive love scene written for the characters was literally torn out of the shooting script by producer Sam Katzman to keep principal photography from running over schedule.
- For a beach scene shot on a Columbia sound stage covered in truckloads of sand, actor Kenneth Tobey sank so deep he appeared shorter than co-star Faith Domergue on camera, and had to dig himself out between takes.
- Much of the film was shot at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, where naval personnel were given supporting roles, and director Robert Gordon filmed inside an actual submarine, above and under water, using handheld cameras to keep costs low.
