Plot summary
Stone Age tribes wander a harsh land. A volcano and an earthquake kill the leader of the Dark Tribe and swallow many of its members. Mak beats Zen for leadership and guides the survivors over a desert toward a new home. They befriend a tribe of fair-haired people, and Mak is given a woman named Noo as his wife; a girl offered in exchange tries to leave with her mate and is caught. The Dark tribe settles in a fertile valley. Noo bears twin boys, Rool and Toomak, on the day another woman bears a mute girl. The tribe calls for the mute girl to be sacrificed, but after a lightning strike the old witch takes her as an apprentice.
