Plot summary
Michel, the young son of Charles Thénier, dies when a sports car strikes him on the road home from the beach and its driver does not stop. The police turn up nothing, so Charles begins a journal in which he sets down his plan to find the man and kill him. He guesses that the car needed repairs, and that whoever runs a garage might be the one. By chance he learns that the actress Hélène Lanson rode in a car damaged on that day. Under the name Marc Andrieux he gets close to her. When she travels to Brittany to see her sister's family, he goes with her and meets her brother-in-law, Paul Decourt, who is cruel to his wife Jeanne and despised by his teenage son Philippe.
