Plot summary
Banker Favraux has made his fortune through swindles and blackmail. A note signed only Judex reaches his mansion and asks that he hand back the money he took from his victims. Pierre Kerjean, who once went to prison for Favraux, arrives seeking help and is led out of the room. Fearing for his safety, Favraux engages the private detective Cocantin to keep watch at a party where he intends to announce that his widowed daughter Jacqueline, mother of a small girl named Alice, will marry a wealthy older man. Favraux is infatuated with the governess Marie Verdier and wants her as his wife after the wedding. Judex and his helpers are also watching over Jacqueline.
