Plot summary
Violette Nozière lives in early-1930s France with Germaine Nozière, her mother, and Baptiste Nozière, a train driver. Only the two women know that Baptiste is not Violette's father. Her parents take her for an innocent eighteen-year-old, and she chafes at the respectable, petit-bourgeois life they keep; in the less salubrious quarters of the city she works as a prostitute. The money she earns, and the sums she steals from the household, pay for her lover Jean Dabin, a student. A doctor tells the family that Violette has contracted syphilis, and she tells her parents that she inherited the disease from them.
