Plot summary

Jack Elliot fells beetle-infested pines on a steep Montana slope with a crew of five. A runaway backcountry fire took most of his unit and ended his years as a smokejumper, and the quiet of the woods suits him now. Then his phone rings: his estranged ex-wife cannot reach the camp in Wyoming to collect their teenage daughter, and she asks him to do it. He has not seen Hanna or her mother in five years. He agrees, and rides to SkyCamp on his '98 Wide Glide with sleeping bags strapped on the back. Hanna waits out in the middle of nowhere and does not expect a twenty-year-old Harley. She gets on anyway, and the two head across Montana.
