Plot summary
In the months before the 2004 presidential election, Mary Mapes, a producer for 60 Minutes Wednesday, and her team, Mike Smith, Lucy Scott and Colonel Roger Charles, look for evidence about whether George W. Bush received favorable treatment while serving in the military. Charles, who knows how the military works, doubts there were errors. Some accounts say Bush's records went missing or were altered, and that he struggled to meet minimal fitness testing. Following leads, the crew finds Bill Burkett, who says he holds memos and letters showing Bush got preferential treatment and went absent without leave for a year in 1972. Dan Rather also interviews former Texas lieutenant governor Ben Barnes, who says he pulled strings so Bush could join the National Guard.
