Plot summary
Brea is a journalist at the Sacramento Post, frustrated when a rival journalist covers the scandal story she had tried to publish and her boss Carl calls her work a fluff piece. That evening she has a birthday dinner with her boyfriend John and their friends Darren and Malia, and Darren ruins the surprise mountain getaway John had planned for Brea. John gives Brea a car he built in his shop, and the two set off. At a gas station, a frightened woman named Cara makes an odd remark about the Fourth of July, while outside bikers harass John until Sheriff Marnes steps in. Brea and John reach the secluded house, and their evening is interrupted when Darren and Malia arrive unannounced.
