Plot summary
Mel Sampson is a private investigator in Los Angeles. A woman from his past, Dorothy Mahler, has gone missing, and Sampson takes on the task of finding her. His search leads through the city's strip clubs and to petty drug dealers. Dorothy calls him from a trail near downtown, borrowing a phone from two dealers named Jesse and Matthew, and tells him that people in the city are angry with her.
