Plot summary
Miami private investigator Tony Rome is a former cop who lives on a powerboat named Straight Pass and has a gambling problem. His former partner, Ralph Turpin, asks him to drive home a young woman who was left unconscious in a hotel room. She is Diana Pines, the daughter of construction magnate Rudolph Kosterman, who hires Rome to learn why his daughter has been acting irrationally. Once she regains consciousness, Diana discovers that a diamond pin she wore the night before is gone, and she and her stepmother, Rita Kosterman, ask Rome to recover the pin. A divorcee named Ann Archer also helps him.
