Biography

Jeffrey Lynn was an American actor and film producer who worked mainly in the Golden Age of Hollywood and was typecast as the dependable romantic lead. Born in Auburn, Massachusetts, he attended Bates College and taught school before a Warner Bros. screen test led to a long-term contract in 1938. His second film, Four Daughters (1938), brought him national fame. He was the leading contender for Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind, and he earned excellent reviews as one of the trio in the gangster film The Roaring Twenties (1939) opposite James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart. In The Fighting 69th (1940) he played the poet-soldier Joyce Kilmer. He later played the husband of Jeanne Crain in A Letter to Three Wives (1949), a popular film. He also acted on Broadway in plays such as Any Wednesday and Dinner at Eight, and he worked in television and summer stock.
