Plot summary
In Strafford, Connecticut, the Tuttle family is a musical household with three daughters: Laurie, Fran, and Amy. When songwriter Alex Burke enters their lives, all three sisters are drawn to him. Alex and Laurie seem especially well matched. Alex's friend Barney Sloan, a cynical music arranger, arrives to help with some arrangements. His bleak outlook contrasts sharply with Alex's. Laurie tries to change Barney's negative attitude, while Fran, Bob's fiancée, and Amy also have feelings for Alex. Barney is taken into the household, but he sees little value in himself even as his feelings for Laurie begin to grow.
