Plot summary
Iris Deerborne is a shy teenager in a small Oklahoma town in 1960, mocked by classmates and criticized by her mother Francie, who wishes she were more glamorous. She slips out at night to swim in a pond, and she is drawn to Jeff Owings, who works for her father. Walking to school one morning, she is cornered by boys until Maggie Richmond, a new arrival, throws rocks at them. Maggie tells the other girls her father is a photographer for Life magazine, then admits to Iris at the pond that he works for an agricultural trade publication. Maggie's stern father beats her for staying out; the family moved to town after trouble caused by Maggie's behavior. The two become close friends, and Maggie takes Iris to the local stylist, Hazel Atkins, for a new hairdo.
