Plot summary
Art puts George out of a New York City apartment, and George is on the streets. He says someone has stolen his wallet, and the telephone calls he makes bring no help. To keep warm he sits in a public hospital emergency room, where a nurse, Maire, treats him with kindness. He pawns his belongings, at first for liquor and later for beer, and he gets a bed in a homeless shelter. There he meets Dixon, a friendly man who keeps him company while he works through the paperwork of applying for public benefits, and a meeting with an advocate, Laura, shows him more clearly what help he needs. George also wants to reach Maggie, the daughter he abandoned.
