Plot summary
Ten years ago Andrew Farmer married his childhood sweetheart, Beth, and the two now live in Boston, where he works as a literary agent. His marriage has suffered while his career has not. On Christmas Eve the couple argue about whether he has been unfaithful; Beth runs out into the night and a car strikes her while she is trying to catch the neighbors' dog. An angel named Lionel then comes to Andrew with an offer: he can live the last three days of Beth's life again, as if she were still alive. What he cannot do is change her fate. Andrew has those three days to work out which gift he can still give her.
