Plot summary
Gorr the God Butcher, whose daughter died in a barren desert despite his prayers, renounces the gods, takes up the Necrosword and vows to kill them all. Thor, meanwhile, has been fighting alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy, and a distress signal from Sif pulls him away from the team. He finds the Asgardian warrior wounded, and her warning points to New Asgard as Gorr's next target. There, Jane Foster, Thor's former girlfriend, is being treated for terminal cancer; she travels there hoping the broken hammer Mjolnir might heal her. The hammer reforges and bonds itself to her, and she becomes the Mighty Thor. Thor arrives as Gorr's attack begins, and he, Jane, King Valkyrie and Korg join forces against him.

- Russell Crowe wanted to play Zeus with a Greek accent, but Taika Waititi thought it would sound too silly and had him do takes in both Greek and British accents, suggesting the British one resemble Crowe's Maximus in Gladiator. Waititi concluded Crowe was right and used the Greek accent in the final film.
- Matt Damon, who cameoed in Thor: Ragnarok as an Asgardian actor playing Loki, was given special permission to enter Australia during the country's strict pandemic travel restrictions because Love and Thunder was providing jobs for Australians, which drew criticism that he received preferential treatment while many Australians abroad could not return.
- Russell Crowe was first cast as Satan in Thor: Love and Thunder, but his part became Zeus. Septimus Caton was later cast as Satan and did makeup and prosthetic tests, though Satan is not in the film.
- Natalie Portman agreed to return as Jane Foster after a single meeting with Taika Waititi, who was given creative freedom by Marvel Studios to reimagine her role and offered to portray the character in a different, fresh way with a license to be adventurous, fun and funny.
- Taika Waititi planned a cameo for Jesus in a cutaway gag during the Omnipotence City sequence, after Valkyrie mentioned a "God of Carpentry". Cyttorak was considered as one of the deities in Omnipotence City, but the idea was scrapped.
- The film was not released in Malaysia, Brunei, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Qatar and Jordan because of its LGBT elements; Variety reported the Malaysian release did not happen because Disney refused the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia's requested cuts, which the Malaysian government confirmed were over LGBT elements.
- At the London premiere Q&A, Taika Waititi said the film would be "super gay" when asked how gay it would be, and critics and moviegoers who saw it expressed disappointment that the statement was false and that Marvel had queerbait the audience.
- Chris Hemsworth was paid $20 million upfront for Thor: Love and Thunder, an increase from the $15 million he earned upfront for each of Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
