The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009) on Netflix

Plot summary

A social worker in Warsaw, Irena Sendler has sided with the city's Jews since childhood, when her father, a physician, died of typhus caught while treating poor Jewish patients. She proposes bringing Jewish children out of the ghetto, and her fellow workers, her parish priest and her mother Janina doubt the plan. With forged papers that identify her as a nurse, she appeals to parents at the ghetto entrance to let their children go, promising to record where each is placed so families can reunite after the war. Many are afraid they will never see them again. Her university friend Stefan knows overlooked exits and helps the underground organization Żegota plan routes: children leave in boxes on wheelbarrows, through the sewers, or walked hand in hand through the front door of city hall.
