Plot summary
Mara Childs is the daughter of a Pentecostal pastor in a remote Appalachian community. Her father, Lemuel, leads a sect whose believers handle venomous snakes as a test of faith. Garret Booner courts Mara with her father's approval, and she agrees to marry him, though she is pregnant by Augie Slaughter, who has left the church, and she keeps it from everyone. Hope Slaughter, Augie's mother, performs the pre-marital check that the community requires of a bride. When a minor dies while handling snakes, Garret tells Lemuel that the police are investigating him, and Lemuel lets Garret claim the snakes as his own, which costs Garret his job.
