Plot summary
Bill Bryson has spent two decades in England and now lives back in the United States. A reporter questions him about his travel guides and why he has not written one for North America, and the interview leaves him unsettled. After a friend's funeral, he notices an Appalachian Trail marker and decides to walk the trail's full length. His wife Catherine objects, citing reports of accidents and murders along the route, and agrees only if he finds a companion. Everyone he asks turns him down. Stephen Katz, a man he has not seen in years, gets in touch and offers to come; he is a recovering alcoholic, out of condition and fond of junk food. Catherine disapproves of the choice but accepts it.
