Plot summary
Lib Wright, an English nurse and a veteran of the Crimean War, travels to a rural Irish village in 1862. A council of local dignitaries asks her to keep watch over Anna O'Donnell, a girl whose family says she has taken no food for four months. Sister Michael, a nun, observes Anna too, and the two women must report what they find separately. The community, still marked by the Great Famine, is wary of the Englishwoman. Anna looks healthy and says she is sustained by manna from Heaven. William Byrne, a journalist who grew up nearby and lost his family in the famine, is covering the case and believes it is a hoax. Lib, mourning her only child, takes laudanum to sleep.
