Plot summary
Holmes is 93 and long retired, living in Sussex with his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her son Roger. He has come back from Hiroshima with a prickly ash plant that he hopes will help his failing memory. Watson's published version of his final case displeases him, and he wants to set down his own account of it, but the details will not come back. Roger, whom Holmes teaches to keep the bees in the apiary, keeps pressing him about that case, and Holmes comes to enjoy the boy's company. The case began when Thomas Kelmot asked Holmes why his wife Ann had grown estranged from him after two miscarriages, and Holmes followed her around London. Mrs Munro grows weary of nursing an infirm old man.
