Plot summary
In Flint, Michigan, Wilona and Daniel Watson are raising three children, Byron, Kenny and Joetta, in a close-knit family. In the summer of 1963, fifteen-year-old Byron's antics go over the top, and his parents decide the family needs Grandma Sands' no-nonsense ways in Birmingham, Alabama. The Watsons load their 1948 Plymouth Brown Bomber and drive south. In Birmingham the family meets Grandma Sands and her friend Mr. Robert, and the children find that daily life there is very different from life in Flint.
