Plot summary
Paul Carstairs brings his family from Ohio to the Welsh countryside for a summer of research, and they take rooms at Aylwood Manor. Ellie, the younger daughter, is delighted; Jan, her older sister, resents the move. Mrs. Aylwood, the manor's owner, wants the newcomers gone until she notices that Jan can hear the whispers coming from the forest. Ellie names the new doll she was given Nerak, and Jan sees a girl in the bedroom mirror just before it breaks. Her parents blame her for the disturbance. Jan meets a local boy, Mark, and Helen, a village woman who tells them about Karen, Mrs. Aylwood's daughter, who disappeared into the forest years earlier, taken by a spirit the locals call the Watcher.

- Director Melissa Joan Hart was a fan of the 1980 film version and spent roughly seventeen years trying to obtain the rights to make an updated version of the story, which she also executive produced.
- During filming, director Melissa Joan Hart shot the underwater scenes with her iPhone, and since she was unable to film at night, black magic lenses were used to fake the nighttime look.
- Early in production, the filmmakers chose to remove the science-fiction elements found in the novel and the 1980 film, so that the story would be more cohesive and a more straightforward supernatural tale.
