Plot summary
A wounded young man, James, crawls along a deserted road and is picked up by Deputy Sheriff Daniel Carter, who drives him to a rural hospital left largely empty after a fire. Allison Fraser, Carter's estranged wife, is a nurse there. The hospital runs on a skeleton crew. Robed cultists surround the building. Inside, people are turning into something inhuman.

- Jeremy Gillespie was working at Pinewood on a floor below Guillermo del Toro, who was then working on the unfinished At the Mountains of Madness, and heard del Toro say he wanted to make a Lovecraft film unlike any before; that, Gillespie said, birthed the film's pyramids and triangles imagery.
- The film's practical creature effects were paid for by an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign that raised $82,510, while the film's remaining funding came through traditional channels from the production company.
- Gillespie worked as an assistant art director and Kostanski as a special makeup effects artist on David Ayer's Suicide Squad, which was shooting in Toronto, and that led members of Suicide Squad's special effects team to work on The Void.
- Gillespie called the shoot a soul-crushing nightmare in which everybody was pushed to the limit, and said the one ray of hope was the cast, which came together at the last second.
- The Void was filmed in Sault Ste. Marie at the former Sir James Dunn Collegiate and Vocational School, a building that was demolished in 2016.
- The directors came out of the Canadian comedy-horror group Astron-6, whose films include Manborg and The Editor, but The Void's serious tone led the group not to present it under the Astron-6 name.
