John Spencer
Biography
John Spencer was an American actor known for supporting film roles and two long-running network dramas. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, and raised in Totowa, he entered the Professional Children's School in Manhattan in 1963 and later attended Fairleigh Dickinson University without earning a degree. He began on television with The Patty Duke Show, then moved into films with a supporting part in WarGames (1983). His stage work brought him an Obie for Still Life, a 1981 off Broadway play about a Vietnam veteran, and The Day Room earned him a Drama Desk nomination. In 1986 he appeared on Broadway in Execution of Justice. His screen credits included Presumed Innocent (1990), Forget Paris (1995), and The Rock (1996). He played attorney Tommy Mullaney on L.A. Law from 1990 to 1994, then Leo McGarry on The West Wing from 1999, earning a Primetime Emmy in 2002 among five nominations.

Getting ready for a role
Spencer played street-wise attorney Tommy Mullaney on L.A. Law from 1990 to 1994. He said the character's disheveled wardrobe came from his own clothes, and that he and co-star Cecil Hoffman prepared for the role in New York City.

Spencer trained at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan starting in 1963, where his classmates included Liza Minnelli and violinist Pinchas Zukerman.
