Plot summary
Cate McCall is a lawyer in recovery from alcoholism and on probation, and she is estranged from her family. To be reinstated to the bar and to regain custody of her young daughter, she accepts a pro bono appeal on behalf of Lacey, a woman convicted of murder. With help from her assistant, Cate works to prove that Lacey's conviction was wrong. At the same time she fights her drinking and her habit of working without pause. The case takes hold of her, and the arranged visits with her daughter go unused while she hunts for the evidence that will free Lacey.
