Plot summary
Tracey Berkowitz is fifteen and calls herself a normal girl. Her parents are overbearing and often neglectful, and at her public school she is bullied and has no friends. Her nine-year-old brother Sonny has acted like a dog since Tracey hypnotized him, a game that their father considers an annoying phase. Tracey develops a crush on Billy Zero, a new student, and imagines a tabloid life with him. Then Sonny goes missing, and Tracey stops attending classes and stops living at home. She rides buses around the city looking for him, keeping company with other lost and homeless people, and talking with her psychiatrist, Dr. Heker, who doubts that Tracey's view of the world is accurate.

- Footage from the film was released under a Creative Commons license as four torrents of about four gigabytes each, and a contest was held whose winning re-edit went on the DVD. It was the first time in cinema history that a director made free downloads of a film available concurrent with its theatrical release.
- Elliot Page was Bruce McDonald's first choice to play Tracey Berkowitz, and the director first talked to him at 15, the same age as the character. Page felt he wasn't ready at the time, and McDonald couldn't raise the financing until the actor was a little older.
- Bruce McDonald built the film's mosaic split screen out of as many as eight frames at once, drawing on The Thomas Crown Affair, The Boston Strangler, a Beastie Boys video and Piet Mondrian's paintings. Each section of the screen showed a different angle of the same scene to mirror Tracey's fragmented mind.
- Three editors cut the film on two Macs using Apple Final Cut Pro, and one particular bloom sequence used all 99 available tracks, generating nearly 200 minutes of running footage inside two minutes of actual running time.
