Plot summary
Dan Forester is a biology teacher and a former Green Beret. He is turned down for a research post with the Army. During the televised World Cup final, time travelers from 2051 appear on the field and announce that humanity thirty years on faces extinction at the hands of alien invaders, the White Spikes. Armies sent to the future come back decimated, so a global draft begins. Dan is conscripted for a seven-day tour and fitted with an electronic vambrace that will pull him home when his time is up. Emmy, his wife, wants him to ask James Forester, the engineer father he no longer speaks to, to cut the device off so the family can disappear. Dan meets James and walks away still wearing it.

- Chris Pratt said that while shooting the film's Russia scenes on Iceland's Vatnajökull glacier, the crew was told a couple had frozen to death after falling through a fissure, but they still decided to take the risk, hoping to impress audiences.
- For the time-jump effect, the visual-effects team tested an underwater cloud tank to simulate time displacement, but VFX supervisor JD Schwalm instead used a practical wall of smoke thick enough that the camera could not see through it, flying wire-rigged actors through the smoke before adding CGI electrical currents.
- Creature designer Ken Barthelmey, hired by production designer Peter Wenham, created over 67 concept ideas for the White Spikes, taking inspiration from the Tripods of War of the Worlds and the Sentinels from The Matrix.
