Plot summary
Cody Griffin is an adopted teenager in the coastal town of Mahone Bay, a fast swimmer on his school team with a big meet coming up and a girlfriend named Samantha. He is also failing biology, which pairs him with Jess Wheatley, the class's marine life expert and the son of Big John Wheatley, a fisherman obsessed with mermaids. On his thirteenth birthday, Cody cannot quench his thirst, and Samantha gets a shock when he kisses her. Scales appear on his hands, he fries his alarm clock and a milk container sticks to his hand. Jess, who spotted the scales first, agrees to help if Cody teaches him to swim, and his tests show Cody can shock people, hold his breath a long time underwater, cling to walls and speak to fish.
