Plot summary

During World War II, a bombing raid by Allied planes on a Slovak town leads a young girl to pray for rescue. Decades later, Father Frank Shore serves the Vatican in Chicago as a postulator, weighing claims that miracles have occurred. Because he has rejected so many false reports, he is called the Miracle Killer, and his belief is shaken. His superiors send him to examine the case of Helen O'Regan, a devout woman proposed for sainthood after a statue of the Virgin Mary bled and a girl with terminal lupus was cured. Roxanne, Helen's daughter, does not share her mother's faith and has not forgiven her for leaving when Roxanne was sixteen.
