Biography

Monique Mojica is a playwright, director and actor who was born in New York City and came to Canada as a founding member of Native Earth Performing Arts. She grew up in a theater family: her mother, Gloria Miguel, and her aunts Muriel Miguel and Lisa Mayo founded Spiderwoman Theater, and Mojica began acting training at age three. Her plays include Birdwoman and the Suffragettes, Chocolate Woman Dreams the Milkyway and Princess Pocahontas and the Blue Spots. She has worked with Floyd Favel on Native performance projects. Mojica was artistic director of Native Earth Performing Arts from 1983 to 1985 and is artistic director of Chocolate Woman Collective. With Jani Lauzon and Michelle St. John she co-founded Turtle Gals Performance Ensemble. Her film work includes Smoke Signals (1998), and Native Americans in the Arts nominated her for best supporting actress for that role. In 2019 she performed in The Unnatural and Accidental Women at the National Arts Centre's Indigenous Theatre.

  1. A change of course

    Mojica held the role of artistic director at Native Earth Performing Arts between 1983 and 1985. That company is the oldest professional Indigenous theater organization in Canada.

    Mojica co-founded Turtle Gals Performance Ensemble with Jani Lauzon and Michelle St. John, and it produced the plays The Scrubbing Project and The Triple Truth.
