Plot summary
In 2039, with Earth overcrowded, the United Nations orders every country to cut its population by five percent each year. The United States answers with 10-241, known as the Thinning, a school aptitude test, and students who fail it are executed. Blake Redding, the son of Texas governor Dean Redding, dates a girl named Ellie Harper, and neither of them studies for the exam. Blake passes and Ellie fails. Blake calls his father to ask that she be spared, and his father refuses. A year later, on the day of his final exam, Blake records a video in which he promises to fail on purpose, to test his father's loyalty.
