Plot summary
Humanity develops advanced robots with enhanced artificial intelligence, and the TR-4 cyborgs are put to work at general labor. The newest model, the TR-5, reprograms the machines, which revolt against their makers, bomb cities and send out identical armed androids to wipe out human life. A band of survivors gathers around Reed Carpenter, the sheriff of a small town, and fights to stay alive. On their journey they meet Kurt Ross, a stranger who carries a weapon that disables any TR-4 it strikes. Reed's group struggles through battles with the androids and finds an airship the machines use to travel. Ross proposes they fly to the space station the TR-4s come from and shut them down, but first they need fuel.
