Plot summary
Jack Malloy and Ellie O'Brien are sophomores at the same high school. Jack's mother has died, leaving him with older brothers who roughhouse and a father who wants his sons to be tough. Ellie's father walked out on her and her mother, and her oldest friend Sassy now prefers Aspen's company. Both have weekend sports events: Jack wants a place on the varsity hockey squad, where the bullying Porter stands in his way, and Ellie's rhythmic gymnastics team must do well at its tournament or school budget cuts will strip it of team status. On Friday they land in the nurse's office, quarrel about whose life is harder, and keep arguing by text, each wishing for the other's life. Lightning knocks them out, and they wake in each other's bodies, with the swap to keep secret.
