Plot summary
Theo has retired from banking; his wife Susanna works as an actress, and they have a young daughter, Ella. People dislike Theo because his first wife drowned in a bathtub and he was tried and acquitted. Before Susanna starts work in London, the family books a house in Wales, though each believes the other arranged the booking. The light switches baffle Theo, time passes faster than it should, and everyone has nightmares. A man's shadow appears on Ella's bedroom wall one night. In town for groceries, Theo is asked by the shopkeeper whether he has met Stetler, the supposed owner, and is handed a drafting triangle and told to measure the right angles. A local woman asks him the same question when he leaves the shop.

- In March 2018 it was announced that Kevin Bacon would star, with David Koepp directing and writing, based on the novel by Daniel Kehlmann; Koepp and Bacon had previously collaborated on the 1999 film Stir of Echoes.
- Universal decided to forego the film's originally scheduled theatrical release in the United States and Canada, because of movie theater closures since mid-March under COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
- Over the weekend of July 31 Universal lowered the price of the film from $19.99 to $5.99, after which You Should Have Left finished second on FandangoNow and fifth at Apple TV.
