Plot summary
Dr. Robert Morgan is the only healthy person left after a plague killed most of the population or turned them into creatures that shun daylight, mirrors and garlic. He follows the same routine each day: waking, marking the calendar, collecting weapons, hunting as many of the creatures as he can and burning their bodies. At nightfall he locks himself inside his home. He believes a bite from an infected vampire bat, received during his time stationed in Panama, left him immune. In December 1965 his wife Virginia and daughter Kathy died of the plague before the public understood that the dead would rise, and he buried Virginia himself rather than leave her at the public burn pit used for Kathy.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Last Man on Earth (1964)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Hammer Film Productions had bought the rights to Richard Matheson's novel and announced its own adaptation in 1958, but British censors refused to allow the film to be made, so producer Anthony Hinds resold the script to American producer Robert L. Lippert instead.
- An earlier plan to adapt the novel Earth Abides fell apart after the release of The World, the Flesh and the Devil in 1959, which prompted a Lippert staffer, Harry Spalding, to instead suggest filming Richard Matheson's book, setting this production in motion.
- Richard Matheson hated how his script turned out but still needed screen credit to keep receiving residual payments, so he used the pseudonym 'Logan Swanson,' a name combined from his wife's mother's maiden name and his own mother's maiden name.
