Gerald Campion

Biography

Gerald Campion was an English actor who trained at RADA from the age of fifteen and worked in many films and television programs, largely comedies. Born in Bloomsbury, London, he became best known for his role as Billy Bunter in the 1950s television adaptation Billy Bunter of Greyfriars School, a juvenile part he kept playing well past the character's age, and he was 40 when the series ended. He later returned to Bunter in an episode of the BBC Radio 7 series Whatever Happened to ...? In 1954 he played Coatsleeve Charlie in the first episode of Hancock's Half Hour, and in 1979 he recorded a part in Shada, a Doctor Who story that was never completed as planned. After he left acting, he ran clubs and restaurants in Soho, most notably Gerry's.

Early training
At 15, Campion earned a spot at RADA. He went on to appear in many films and television programs, mostly comedies.

Campion had his only major success as Bunter, a juvenile part he played well even though he was far older than the character, being 40 when the series ended.
A change of course
After he left acting, Campion operated restaurants and clubs in Soho, London. Gerry's, his best known venture, was a private members' club that ran for a long time and drew a mainly theatrical membership.
