Plot summary
After the killing of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, the Congo is at war and the mineral-rich province of Katanga is breaking away under Moise Tshombe. Dag Hammarskjold, the United Nations Secretary General, puts the Irish diplomat Conor Cruise O'Brien in charge of the peacekeeping mission and privately warns that Katanga could trigger World War III. Irish Commandant Pat Quinlan brings a company of peacekeepers to a UN compound near Jadotville and, judging it open to attack, has his men dig trenches and defensive positions. In town he meets Rene Faulques, a French mercenary hired by the mining companies backing Katanga, and the Belgian colonist Madame LaFontagne tells him that Jadotville holds the world's richest uranium deposits.

- Some of the cast were put through a training camp in South Africa before filming. Director Richie Smyth said the only way to stop them acting like actors pretending in an action movie was to train them to be soldiers, so he did.
