Plot summary
Cooper, a widower who once flew test craft for NASA, farms corn in a world where dust storms and failing crops are pushing humanity toward extinction. He raises Tom and Murph with his father-in-law Donald. Murph blames a ghost for the books that fall from her shelf, and after a dust storm Cooper reads the dust on her floor as binary code, coordinates that bring him and Murph to a hidden NASA facility. There Professor John Brand tells them a wormhole appeared near Saturn decades earlier, placed by an unknown intelligence, opening onto worlds near a black hole named Gargantua. Three of the twelve astronauts sent ahead reported promising planets. Cooper is asked to pilot the Endurance and carry frozen embryos to start a colony, while Brand works on a gravity equation. Murph begs him not to go.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Interstellar (2014)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- As one security measure, Interstellar was filmed under the name Flora's Letter, Flora being one of Nolan's four children with producer Emma Thomas.
- Thorne laid down two guidelines early on: nothing would violate established physical laws, and the wild speculations would spring from science and not from the fertile mind of a screenwriter. He then spent two weeks arguing Nolan out of having a character travel faster than light.
- Thorne collaborated with Franklin and a team of 30 people at Double Negative, giving the engineers pages of theoretical equations from which they wrote new CGI rendering software. Some individual frames took up to 100 hours to render, totaling 800 terabytes of data, and the work led to three scientific papers.
- Safety concerns canceled a day of filming on the Svínafellsjökull glacier, so close-ups of Cooper and Mann's fight scene were shot in a motel parking lot painted to resemble it. While filming a water scene in Iceland, Hathaway almost suffered hypothermia because her dry suit had not been properly secured.
- Nolan chose not to give Zimmer a script or any plot details, handing him instead a single page that told the story of a father leaving his child for work, and it was through that connection that Zimmer created the early stages of the soundtrack.
- For a cornfield scene, production designer Nathan Crowley planted 500 acres of corn that would be destroyed in an apocalyptic dust storm scene, intended to be similar to the storms experienced during the Dust Bowl in 1930s America.
- The asymmetric brightness of the accretion disk that the film depicts is very well visible in the first image of the event horizon of a black hole, obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope team in 2019.
- It was reported that Interstellar was the most pirated film of 2015, with an estimated 46.7 million downloads on BitTorrent.
