Plot summary

Tony Webster, the owner of a camera shop in London, keeps to a quiet routine, and his ex-wife Margaret and his pregnant daughter Susie are part of it. A letter from a lawyer tells him that Sarah Ford has died and has left him five hundred pounds and a diary. Sarah is the mother of Veronica, the girlfriend Tony had at university. The diary is with Veronica, and the lawyer will not pass on her address without her consent. Over lunch with Margaret, Tony speaks about Veronica for the first time, and about the weekend he once spent with her family: her father David, her brother Jack and her mother Sarah. He recalls his school days and his friends Colin and Alex, and how Adrian Finn joined their group. Colin and Alex help him try to reach Veronica.
