Plot summary

The family lives deep in the woods, a few days' travel from Birka, and times are hard: hunting and fishing have gone badly for a long time. Runa's father Joar joins a Viking raid and does not come back, and the family fears he never will. Runa, the elder daughter, takes on his chores and hunts with a bow to feed the household. She hopes he will return, and dreams she cannot explain trouble her nights. Something dangerous is in the forest around their home. Out hunting one day she comes across a wounded warrior, barely conscious, and brings him inside so the family can tend his wounds. He carries news of Joar.
