Lowell Sherman
Biography
Lowell Sherman, an American actor and director, started as a child actor in touring companies and later performed on Broadway in Judith of Bethulia (1904) and The Girl of the Golden West (1905). Born in San Francisco in 1888 to parents tied to the theater, he moved into silent films by 1915, often playing playboys. His villain work in Way Down East (1920) came when D. W. Griffith chose him for that film, and he kept playing villains and playboys in the 1920s and early talkies, among them Ladies of Leisure (1930) and What Price Hollywood? (1932). In 1930 he began both starring in and directing his own pictures, starting with Lawful Larceny and including The Royal Bed (1931) and Bachelor Apartment (1931). He turned to directing only, guiding Mae West in She Done Him Wrong (1933) and Katharine Hepburn in Morning Glory (1933), which earned Hepburn her first Academy Award. He died in 1934.
