Donal Donnelly
Biography
Donal Donnelly was an Irish actor of stage, film and television. Born in Bradford, England, and raised in Dublin, he started out with an amateur group, the Globe Theater Players, and toured with Anew McMaster's Irish repertory troupe before settling in England. His big break came as Gar Private in the premiere of Brian Friel's Philadelphia, Here I Come! at the 1964 Dublin Theatre Festival, and when the production moved to Broadway he and Patrick Bedford were jointly nominated for a Tony Award in 1966. He returned to Broadway in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Sleuth and The Elephant Man, and appeared in Friel premieres including Dancing at Lughnasa and Translations. On screen he played Freddy Malins in The Dead (1987) and Archbishop Gilday in The Godfather: Part III (1990), and he starred with Rita Tushingham in The Knack... and How to Get It (1965). He also toured a one-man show of George Bernard Shaw's writings.

A role that slipped away
For the part of Og in his 1968 movie of Finian's Rainbow, Coppola wanted Donnelly. Tommy Steele ended up filling the role.
Beyond film
In 1968, Donnelly made a record of Irish songs called Take the Name of Donnelly. Tony Meehan, once of the Shadows, arranged, produced and conducted it.
