Plot summary
On 27 April 1940, a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 111 and a Fleet Air Arm Blackburn Skua engage each other and crash near Grotli, Norway. Leutnant Horst Schopis, Feldwebel Wolfgang Strunk and Josef Schwartz survive the wreck, lose their supplies and take shelter in a hunter's cabin as a snowstorm closes in. Captain Charles P. Davenport and his air gunner Robert Smith, the British crew of the Skua, reach the same cabin. Horst lets them in as prisoners of war, divides the room between the two sides and shares the small ration of oatmeal. Wooden furniture goes into the fire, and Horst takes Davenport's lighter to light it, promising to return it.

- The Norwegian patrol commander who took the airmen prisoner turned out by coincidence to be the brother-in-law of a friend of the real Captain R.T. Partridge. The British had trouble proving their nationality until they showed the tailor's label in their uniforms and a British half-crown coin.
- The real German pilot Horst Schopis, whose experience inspired the film, revisited Grotli in 1974 and 2004 and died in 2011 aged 99, a year before the film came out. The real British pilot R.T. Partridge visited Grotli in 1974 and died in 1990.
- The Blackburn Skua flown by the British airmen, serial L2940, was recovered from Breidalsvatnet lake near Grotli in 1974 and is displayed at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton. The Heinkel wreck is still on the mountain at Grotli, about 1,000 metres above sea level.
- The film changed the British airmen's names: the real squadron leader Captain R.T. Partridge became Charles P. Davenport, and his radio operator Lieutenant R.S. Bostock became Robert Smith. The German characters kept names closer to their real counterparts.
