Plot summary
Charles Braude is a boxer in Oslo, married to a gentile woman and part of a Jewish family of six: his parents, two brothers, a sister and himself. Life in Norway feels safe at first, even as German troops occupy the country and Jews elsewhere in Europe are deported to camps. His sister leaves for Sweden; the others stay. Then come the restrictions: radios are seized and passports stamped with a J. In the fall of 1942 Norwegian police pick up Jewish men over fifteen, among them Charles, his father and his brothers, and take them to a dock in Oslo. His mother waits with no word of what will happen to them. The German cargo ship SS Donau is waiting.
