Plot summary
Ten years after the Black Death, Signe, nineteen, travels with her parents and her younger brother Tormod through lawless lands. Bandits led by Dagmar fall on the family; Dagmar kills Tormod while Signe watches, and then keeps Signe alive as a prisoner. In the bandits' camp Signe meets Frigg, a young girl Dagmar has adopted. When Frigg shows her kindness, Dagmar says Signe deserves no compassion, because Signe's people drove the bandits to their trade. Arvid, Dagmar's lover, stops Loke from attacking Signe, and Dagmar declares that she will let the men have Signe so that Frigg can have a younger sister.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The scene in which Signe and Frigg climb across a chasm was shot using two-metre-high rocks beside an ordinary road, with the chasm itself added digitally in post-production.
- The bandits were intended to be surviving followers of the old Æsir religion, but every reference to this was deleted from the finished film.
