Plot summary
In 1823, during the Arikara War, Hugh Glass leads Captain Andrew Henry's fur trappers across what is now the Dakotas. While Glass and his half-Pawnee son Hawk are hunting, an Arikara war party attacks the camp, looking for the chief's abducted daughter, Powaqa. The raid kills many of the men and the rest get away on a boat. Glass takes the survivors on foot toward Fort Kiowa, since he believes the Missouri River would leave them vulnerable. A grizzly bear mauls Glass while he is scouting for game, leaving him near death.

- The Revenant's budget ballooned from an original $60 million to a reported $95 million by July 2015, and reached $135 million by the time production wrapped.
- A planned two-week break from filming The Revenant in December was stretched to six weeks, which forced Tom Hardy to drop out of Suicide Squad.
- At the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro G. Iñárritu won Best Director for the second consecutive time and Emmanuel Lubezki won Best Cinematography for the third consecutive time, while Leonardo DiCaprio took his first Best Actor award after five previous nominations.
- Leonardo DiCaprio said he could name 30 or 40 sequences in the film that were among the most difficult things he had ever done, including going in and out of frozen rivers, sleeping in animal carcasses and what he ate on set.
- In May 2010, Mark L. Smith revealed John Hillcoat was attached to direct The Revenant and Christian Bale was in negotiation to star, but Hillcoat left the project that October.

- Screener copies of The Revenant leaked online less than a week before its release, and the FBI linked the leak to Alcon Entertainment CEO Andrew Kosove, who denied responsibility; in a separate case, a former 20th Century Fox employee was fined $1.12 million in October 2016 for uploading it and The Peanuts Movie.
