Plot summary
Will is a Black boy during the Civil War who has been pressed into a gang of bounty hunters. Because he looks young and harmless, he can approach men the gang is after without raising their guard, and the gang uses his innocent manner to draw them in. The men now send him north to find Nate, a Black Union soldier they have marked, and to bring him back to a meeting place in the South. On the road the soldier comes to treat the boy like a son, and the errand he has agreed to grows harder to carry out.
