Plot summary
Will Andrews, the son of a pastor, naive and idealistic, drops out of Harvard and travels west to Butcher's Crossing, a small Kansas town whose livelihood rests on buffalo hides. Taken with the romance of a buffalo hunt, he falls in with Miller, an experienced and stoic hunter who tells him about a remote Colorado pass where a great herd still survives. Others warn Will against Miller and call the scheme a folly, but Will stakes all of his money on the expedition. That money buys supplies and hires two men: Charlie Hoge, a one-armed drunk who preaches from a bible and comes along to drive the wagon and cook, and Fred Schneider, a brash but practical skinner who insists on a salary because he doubts Miller's tales.
